The Grayson County Alliance (GCA) Food Pantry and a Grayson County High School student are encouraging people to make fighting hunger in the community a priority.

As he did last year, GCHS freshman Daniel Ratley penned a proclamation signed by Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson, declaring February 27 through March 3 Hunger Awareness Week.

“Daniel is setting a great example for other young people. He recognizes he can make a difference in his community now,” GCA Executive Debbie Childress said. “It is very encouraging to see such passion for positive change in his generation.”

The Alliance and Ratley, who regularly volunteers at GCA, are asking Grayson County residents, businesses, and leaders to wear orange on February 28 in recognition of Hunger Free Kentucky Day.

“On Hunger Free Kentucky Day, hunger advocates speak with legislators and rally with Kentucky leaders to promote the state level programs fighting hunger,” Childress said. “According to Feeding Kentucky, which supports the seven-member food banks that serve all Kentucky counties in partnership with over 800 local food pantries and shelters, Farms to Food Banks ensure residents have access to Kentucky-grown produce and is a key element in the battle for food security in Kentucky.”

Last year, GCA distributed 23,678 pounds of produce to the Grayson County community, illustrating the importance of the food pantry, and those who provide the pantry with inventory, to food insecure families.

“Produce is often the one item left out of a family’s grocery cart. The extra cost and short shelf life makes it one of the last foods households purchase,” Childress stated. “Each month we continue to see new families seeking basic food support as they struggle with rising prices at the grocery store. We are here to help any way we can, our programs are designed to help families with a hand up.”

Produce-only distribution

GCA is holding a produce-only distribution on March 22 at the Grayson County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 9:00 a.m. The distribution is open to anyone in Grayson County in need of fresh produce.

“GCA strives to meet their mission of Feeding, Teaching, and Empowering Families every day,” Childress stated. “Wear orange on February 28 and post your photos on social media showing your support using #hungerfreeKY23.”
