A Big Clifty man has been jailed after a vehicle burst into flames on the Western Kentucky Parkway near Clarkson.

Saturday night at approximately 11:10, Kentucky State Police requested the Clarkson Fire Department respond to the westbound 116-mile marker after a vehicle troopers encountered began heavily smoking.

Clarkson FD personnel and Grayson County Deputies Sean Fentress, Wally Ritter and Andy Cast arrived on scene and found the vehicle, an SUV, fully engulfed in flames.

The driver, 55-year-old Roger B. Shartzer, was not injured.

The incident began when Shartzer apparently was involved in a single-vehicle accident in Hardin County and left the scene. Troopers made contact with Shartzer and discovered the vehicle emanating smoke.

Shartzer was arrested and charged with DUI, reckless driving, improper equipment, and failure to wear a seat belt. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
