A Leitchfield man has been arrested after breaking into the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and brandishing a large knife as he walked along South Cannon Drive.
Monday morning, May 8, between 7:45 and 8:00, Leitchfield Police Department Sgt. Keith Harrell and Officer Eugene Cain responded to the Grayson County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office on East White Oak Street.
Upon arriving at the scene, Harrell and Cain found that the suspect forcefully entered the building and stole numerous personal items from the office, police said. In addition to the theft, the suspect ate a pizza and other food belonging to office personnel.
Approximately three hours later, and just as the suspect, 24-year-old Eugene T. Moore, was identified by Cain and Commonwealth Attorney’s Office Investigator Kevin Smith through surveillance video, someone notified police that a man was walking in the 100 block of South Cannon Drive carrying what law enforcement described as a “very large knife.”
Cain, Smith and head of court security, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Luedke (who was in the area), responded and found the man brandishing the knife was Moore.
Moore, police said, dropped the knife, but resisted arrest, resulting in the suspect being tazed.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center where he was charged with second-degree burglary, resisting arrest, public intoxication (excludes alcohol), and second-degree disorderly conduct.
Police said many of the items pilfered from the office have been recovered, but some of the items were damaged.
The sheriff’s office and Leitchfield police responded and found Moore “laying in the middle of South Cannon Drive with no shoes or shirt on,” according to the arrest citation.
Officers asked what he was doing, with Moore responding, “Laying here.” When advised by police that he could not lie in the middle of the road, Moore hopped up off the ground and got into a “karate stance,” the citation states.
Police attempted to reason with Moore, but he “appeared to be under the influence of an illegal drug,” the citation states, as the suspect told police he was hot and was trying to “cool off.” Then, as officers tried to handcuff Moore, he resisted, with police taking Moore to the ground. Moore, though, continued to resist and fight with law enforcement.
Police then delivered “hand strikes to the (suspect’s) face,” bringing the resistance to an end.
In that case, Moore was charged with resisting arrest and public intoxication (excludes alcohol).
