Four thoroughbred horses perished after a transport trailer caught fire on the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County.
Monday morning at approximately 6:30, the Bardstown Fire Department and Nelson County Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze at the 29-mile marker of the parkway. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found the horse trailer had “heavy fire involvement,” according to the Bardstown Fire Department.
“The employees of the hauling company (were) able to get four out of the eight thoroughbreds out of the trailer prior to FD arrival,” the fire department said.
The loss of the horses ($750,000) and trailer ($250,000) is estimated to be about $1 million.
The parkway was shut down for approximately one hour while firefighters worked the scene.
The fire is being investigated by Nelson County Fire & Rescue.
