Two Grayson County heroes pulled a driver out of a truck that flipped on Millerstown Road only seconds before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Monday morning at approximately 7:45, Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins and Det. Wally Ritter, the Clarkson and Wax Fire Departments and EMS responded to the accident in the 9900 block of Millerstown Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that the passenger side tires of an eastbound GMC Sonoma, being driven by 52-year-old Jeffery Fields, of Clarkson, left the road. Fields then lost control as the vehicle crossed both lanes of traffic and left the road, leaving brake marks approximately 60-feet long.

After leaving the roadway, the truck struck an old railroad tie, flipping the truck onto its top.

A Grayson County man and passerby, Jonathan Smith, of Millerstown, arrived on scene just as the accident occurred and attempted to pull Fields out of the vehicle, which was producing heavy smoke, Smith said. Smith, though, was unable to extract Fields until another passerby, Hunter Dyke, also of Grayson County, drove upon the wreck.

Both Smith and Dyke then successfully pulled Fields from the wreckage only seconds prior to the vehicle becoming engulfed in a fireball.

Fields, who refused transport to the ER, appeared to have suffered only contusions on his elbow.
