Bullitt Co. deputy jailer arrested after allegedly stealing over $25k intended for inmate accounts

A Bullitt County deputy jailer has been accused of stealing over $25,000 from the Bullitt County Detention Center.

The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56-year-old Gene E. Maness on Tuesday after being informed by jail officials that someone was stealing money from the jail, according to a report by WAVE.com.

Maness, while being questioned by police, admitted to taking $25,600 from inmate accounts, as he “was in charge of taking money in the jail for inmate accounts,” according to WAVE.com. He carried the money out of the jail in a bag.

He was charged with theft by unlawful taking and first-degree official misconduct and lodged in the Nelson County Detention Center.
