An eastern Kentucky man has died after being attacked by a swarm of bees.

The Harlan County Coroner’s Office said a 59-year-old male died Tuesday night at approximately 5:50 after he moved “an old bag of potting soil from his porch … (and) was stung by a swarm of bees from inside the bag.”

The man’s family and first-responders performed CPR before the victim was transported to Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 788 people died in the U.S. from attacks by bees, hornets and wasps between 2011 and 2021, an average of 72 deaths per year. Eighty-four percent of people killed in those attacks were males.
