Firefighters from around Grayson County worked together to battle two massive fires in heavily wooded areas and fields off Hilton Mill Road and Grayson Springs Road.

The first fire was reported Monday afternoon at approximately 1:25 in the 2200 block of Hilton Mill Road (off Brandenburg Road). Responding to the fire were the Leitchfield, Clarkson and Caneyville Fire Departments.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a large blaze being fed by brisk winds and dry conditions. The fire, which was initially in a field on relatively level ground, spread to a wooded, hilly area before making its way into a deep — approximately 250 feet — valley accessible by only two locations: at each end of the nearly mile-long gorge.

The fire, which also destroyed a few dozen round hay bales, charred over 100 acres of land and kept firefighters busy until about 6:00 p.m.

It should be noted that several Amish men assisted in fighting the fire.

There were a few abandoned homes and outbuildings placed in danger by the fire, but firefighters stopped the progression of the blaze before flames reached the wood-frame structures.

At approximately 3:00, a large fire, estimated initially at over five acres, was reported in the 6800 block of Grayson Springs Road. Firefighters from Clarkson, Wax and Anneta Fire Departments responded and battled the enormous blaze for about six hours.

The fire ate up about 40 acres of woodland and open fields.

The Kentucky Division of Forestry also responded.

There were no injuries reported.

It’s unclear how either fire started.
