The Leitchfield Fire and Police Departments on Tuesday morning responded to a fire alarm at Grayson County High School.

First responders were alerted to the alarm by School Resource Officer Chase Melton, who notified Central Dispatch at approximately 9:25 a.m. that a fire alarm was activated (the company responsible for monitoring the alarm notified dispatch while Melton was communicating with 911).

The high school was evacuated as Leitchfield FD and Leitchfield PD responded to the scene.

LFD Chief Tim Duvall arrived at the school and within a few minutes, at approximately 9:34 a.m., determined that a “dirty smoke detector head in the attic space” set off the alarm.

The school district issued two text messages to parents/guardians, the first at 9:42 a.m., which stated:

Good morning. A fire alarm has unexpectedly gone off in the GCHS main building. At this time there is no apparent cause. We have followed proper procedures and evacuated the building as the Fire Dept and other local officials are on campus to address the situation. Everyone is safe and we are taking all necessary precautions. We will provide an update and classes will resume once we have the all-clear.

School officials sent the second text about 40 minutes later:

We are pleased to inform you that the fire alarm situation at GCHS has been resolved, and we have received the “all clear” from the authorities. We are returning to a normal school day schedule. Our students and staff did a wonder job following GCHS procedures.
