Hunting on city of Leitchfield-owned properties has been outlawed by ordinance with the exception of two city-owned sites where falconry (hunting wild animals with a bird of prey) will be allowed.

The Leitchfield City Council Monday night heard the second and final reading of an ordinance prohibiting hunting (“killing a wild animal for food or sport”) by way of “gunshot, archery, gigging, trapping, or falconry” on any city-owned property with the exception of falconry, which will be allowed at Nut Park and the old landfill off White Street.

The ordinance was unanimously approved by the council.

Fishing at city-owned parks is still allowed.

Executive session

The council then entered into a 25-minute Executive Session.

Upon emerging from the private session, City Attorney Earlene Wilson said the council discussed the acquisition of land that adjoins the transfer station (on West Lake Drive) “for a new entry into the transfer station.”

Wilson noted the money used to purchase the land is already part of the budget, so the acquisition “will hopefully happen soon.”
