The Leitchfield man who caused a serious crash on the bypass that severely injured a Caneyville teenager has been indicted on multiple felony charges.

Michael Bounds, 32, according to court documents, was indicted last week by a Grayson County Grand Jury for second-degree assault, four counts of felony wanton endangerment, his second DUI (aggravating circumstances), first-degree criminal mischief, and leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid with death or serious physical injury.

The indictment arose when, on Tuesday night, March 12 at approximately 7:20, Bounds, traveling south on the William Thomason Byway near Zoe Lane, crossed the center line and struck a northbound Ford F-150, according to Leitchfield police. Bounds then hit a Honda passenger car along with another vehicle.

A passenger in the Honda, a 19-year-old Caneyville woman, was extricated from the vehicle by Leitchfield fire personnel, who had to remove the passenger side door, Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said.

The teen suffered serious injuries, including a “traumatic” head injury, Bounds’ arrest citation states, when she struck the windshield upon impact. She was, though, wearing a seat belt, Duvall stated.

She was transported to University of Louisville Hospital but has since been released and has recovered.

When the Leitchfield Police Department arrived at the scene, officers were “alerted to the fact that” Bounds “had walked away from the scene,” according to LPD.

Bounds was quickly captured by Grayson County Deputy Hunter Miller and Sgt. Jordan Jones in the parking lot of a nearby business. Police then located “multiple open alcoholic beverage containers” inside Bounds’ Chevrolet truck, according to the citation (written by LPD Officer Wally Ritter).

When police spoke with Bounds, “he obviously smelled of alcoholic beverages,” the citation states. Additionally, the suspect, who was unsteady on his feet, displayed bloodshot and glossy eyes, slurred speech and his “mood was roller coaster-like,” according to the citation.

Bounds was arrested and a search warrant obtained for a blood draw at Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center. He was then lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
