A Caneyville man has died in a freak tractor accident while performing a good deed for his neighbor.
Friday night at approximately 8:10, Grayson County Deputies Caleb Owens, Andy Cast and Hunter Miller, the Caneyville and Leitchfield Fire Departments and EMS responded to the 1100 block of Caneyville Cut-Off Road on a report of a man trapped underneath a tractor.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered 82-year-old James Burt Sr. had fallen off a tractor and become trapped underneath the equipment.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Grayson County Coroner Larry Holeman.
Holeman told K105 that Burt was being a Good Samaritan by “grading his neighbor’s driveway,” which had been damaged by recent rains. It appeared, Holeman said, that the tractor got out of control as it encountered gravel while traveling downhill on the driveway. The gravel “acted almost like marbles,” Holeman stated, as the tractor likely became difficult if not impossible to control before a wheel apparently hit a tree, tossing Burt off.
