An eastern Kentucky woman has been accused of severely abusing her three-month-old child.

Kentucky State Police on April 20 began an investigation into possible child abuse after a baby was brought to St. Joseph-London Hospital with critical injuries.

The young girl was airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center where she remains in critical condition, according to Kentucky State Police.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of the baby’s mother, 23-year-old Brianna M. Burkhart, of London, who was charged with three counts of first-degree assault (a class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison) and first-degree criminal abuse (child under the age of 12), also a class B felony.

She was lodged in Laurel County Corrections on a $100,000 cash bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
