A longtime Elizabethtown police officer currently working as a school resource officer for the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office has been, along with his wife, killed in a motorcycle crash.

Kentucky State Police said a trooper “was on patrol when he came up on a collision” at the intersection of the 31-W bypass and the westbound ramp to the Western Kentucky Parkway Sunday night at approximately 8:05.

The preliminary investigation showed that off-duty Hardin County Deputy Billy Edwards, 67, of Elizabethtown, was riding a 2023 Harley Davidson on the Elizabethtown bypass when a 2024 Buick Envista, being driven by 20-year-old Cameron Harris, “attempted to make a sharp right turn onto the (WK Parkway) exit ramp, causing him to collide with the motorcycle,” state police said.

Edwards then lost control of the motorcycle and exited “onto the shoulder of the ramp.” Edwards and his passenger and wife, 58-year-old Kathy Edwards, were ejected from the bike, according to state police. Both died from their injuries.

No one in the Buick was hurt.

Billy Edwards, who worked for 24 years with the Elizabethtown Police Department, was the school resource officer at Creekside Elementary School. He started the job in January.

The crash remains under investigation by accident reconstructionist, Trooper Jesse Harp.
