A Kentucky commonwealth’s attorney has died in a single-vehicle accident in western Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police said troopers are investigating after 1st Judicial Circuit Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael B. Stacy, 68, of Kevil, died when his vehicle left a roadway and struck a tree.
The 1st Judicial Circuit is comprised of Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman counties in far western Kentucky.
The accident, according to state police, happened Monday afternoon at approximately 3:20 in the 3000 block of Hwy 51 in Clinton.
The investigation showed that a 2018 Infinity Q50, being driven by Stacy, was traveling north when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, state police said.
Stacy was pronounced deceased at the scene. His passenger, 30-year-old Michael “Bo” Stacy II, of Cunningham (an assistant commonwealth’s attorney and Michael B. Stacy’s son), was airlifted to an out of state hospital. He has since been released.
Both occupants were wearing their seat belts.
Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman issued the following statement on Stacy’s death:
“Mike Stacy is exactly who you wanted in a courtroom standing up for Kentuckians. As a prosecutor, he was tough, but fair. And as a public servant, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the families he served.
“Mike’s fellow Commonwealth’s Attorneys elected him to lead their statewide association, and he had the rare distinction of receiving the top awards for both County and Commonwealth’s Attorneys during his many years of service to the River Counties.
“I had the privilege to work with Mike throughout the years, and I’m devastated by his sudden loss in a motor vehicle accident today. We are praying for his son and our fellow colleague, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Beau Stacy, who was also involved in the accident. Our sincere condolences are with the Stacy family during this tragic time.”
