A paramedic has died following a shift where he had a “physical altercation with a patient at a detention center.”

Wesley England, 41, a Nelson County EMS paramedic, died on Friday after being airlifted to a Nashville trauma center, according to Supporting Heroes.

He had been involved in a vehicular crash on May 23 believed to have been caused by a heart attack following “a shift where he made multiple emergency responses and had a physical altercation with a patient in a detention facility,” Supporting Heroes said in a social media post.

In addition to serving full-time with Nelson County EMS, England worked part-time with Washington County EMS, Cumberland County EMS and as a part-time school resource officer with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

He previously served with the Louisville Airport Authority, Fort Knox EMS, Campbellsville-Taylor County Rescue and WKU Police Department along with several other Kentucky first responder agencies.
