The Leitchfield City Council discussed adding more playground equipment at Firefighter’s Memorial Park, approved a consensual annexation and reappointed members to the Tourism Commission.

Annexation

The council on Monday night heard the second and final reading of a consensual annexation of 3.7 acres of land at 1710 Sunbeam Road, a property owned by Keith and Nancy Lucas.

City Attorney Earlene Wilson said the annexed property sits adjacent to current city property and is “urban in character.”

“The annexation also meets the statutory requirements of consensual annexation,” Wilson stated.

The council unanimously approved the annexation.

Compensation for Board of Adjustments and Code Enforcement Board

The council heard the first reading of an ordinance stipulating that Board of Adjustments members would receive $100 per month compensation, with the chair of the board receiving $150 per month. The Board of Adjustments meetings are held quarterly.

While no vote was held, Councilwoman Terri Haycraft expressed concern regarding the proposed amount of money the Board of Adjustments members should receive.

She said she researched the board’s activities and noted that the last three meetings lasted less than eight minutes total.

“The last three meetings that they had … in April their meeting lasted 4:51; in December it lasted 1:16; and in September it lasted 1:16,” Haycraft noted while saying she could not support the board receiving $100 per month and the chair receiving $150 per month.

Councilman Billy Dallas, who said, “I know it looks bad,” further stated that he would like members of the board to meet with the council to further discuss their activities and “get their side of the story.”

A second and final reading will presumably be held at the next regularly scheduled city council meeting on June 16.

The first reading of an ordinance stipulating that members of the Code Enforcement Board receive $100 per month with the board chair receiving $150 per month was also heard. A second reading and vote will be held on June 16.

Firefighter’s Memorial Park

Councilman Clayton Miller, noting the construction of pickleball courts and additional parking at the Firefighter’s Memorial Park at 1103 Brandenburg Road, said that he would like to see additional play equipment for children be added at the park.

Miller stated that “maybe a slide, small merry-go-round” or another splash pad be added at the park.

Dallas agreed with Miller saying, “We built the splash park to be expanded. And I think that’s something we really need to expand on. I’m sure it’s expensive, but again, we built this one to be built on to.”

Councilman Tootie Cottrell also supported researching possible equipment additions to the park, as Mayor Harold Miller stated that he “thinks it’s time to look into adding more play equipment.”

No final determinations were made, as the council will continue to research and discuss the possibility of adding play equipment at the popular park.

Tourism Commission

Two members of the Tourism Commission were reappointed to three-year terms. Linda Sharp and Angie Jones, whose terms expire on June 30, 2025, were unanimously approved for reappointments.

Surplus property

The council unanimously approved listing a 1991 Ford F-150 bucket truck, owned by Leitchfield Public Works, to be sold as surplus property on govdeals.com.
