A major Hardin County factory caught fire on Wednesday.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department said in a social media post on Wednesday afternoon that firefighters responded to the report of a fire at Akebono Brake Corporation at 300 Ring Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found smoke coming from the roof, Elizabethtown Fire Chief Mark Malone told The News-Enterprise.

Firefighters fought the blaze, caused by a piece of equipment that caught fire, from the roof of the facility and on the ground, as the blaze was quickly brought under control.

Two employees suffered from smoke inhalation.

Akebono announced in December 2023 that the plant would close in December 2025 after over 35 years in Hardin County. Approximately 640 jobs will be lost in the closure.

The facility makes disc brakes, drum brakes and high-performance brakes.
