Let know one say that Mark Buckles doesn’t still have a fabulous trick or two up his sleeve.
On Monday’s In the Know program, broadcast on K105 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. each weekday morning, award-winning broadcaster and Grayson County native George Lindsey was the guest.
Lindsey and In the Know host Buckles for several minutes discussed multiple topics, including Lindsey’s recent retirement, before the conversation turned toward four legendary broadcasters – Dave Thompson, Milton Metz, Wayne Perkey, and Gary Burbank – who are all members of the Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA) Hall of Fame and were influences on Lindsey during his burgeoning radio broadcasting career.
“It’s funny to hear names like Dave Thompson, and you hear Milton Metz, and you hear Wayne Perkey, and you hear Gary Burbank,” Buckles, a past KBA president, told Lindsey. “If I think about it, all four of those names are in the Kentucky Broadcasters Hall of Fame.”
Lindsey, who began his radio career at K105, responded: “They should be if they’re not. They gotta be; I mean, they’re legends.”
“They are (legends),” Buckles agreed, “I happen to know they are (in the KBA Hall of Fame), and I also happen to know that you are about to join them.”
With a puzzled look on his face, Lindsey simply uttered a barely perceptible, “What?”
“You are being inducted into the Kentucky Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame,” Buckles told a clearly surprised Lindsey.
“Mark, is this a joke?” Are you kidding?” Lindsey queried.
“It is not a joke. I promise you I have the authority to be telling you this. My hand to God, it is the truth,” Buckles exclaimed.
“I don’t even know what to say,” a perplexed Lindsey gushed. “It’s long been a dream of mine to be in the Kentucky Broadcasters Hall of Fame. You know how much I love radio and you know how much I’ve loved doing radio, but to actually hear those words, it’s pretty special.”
“Mark, I’m overjoyed,” Lindsey continued. “At first, I gotta tell you, I didn’t know if it was real or not, but this is fantastic! Thank you so much, it means the absolute world to me.”
And thus one of the great radio broadcasters ever was informed about his impending induction into the Kentucky Broadcaster’s Association Hall of Fame.
Lindsey will officially be inducted into the Hall of Fame in September at the KBA Conference in Owensboro.
Lindsey twice named Academy of Country Music “On-Air Personality of the Year – Major Market” award
Lindsey, who was one-third of the on-air trio, “George, Mo and Erik,” on 100.3 The Bull (KILT-FM) in Houston, and his co-hosts were bestowed the “On-Air Personality of the Year – Major Market” award at the 2023 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Radio Awards at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
That marked the second time the talented trio’s program, “The Morning Bullpen with George, Mo and Erik,” took home the coveted ACM honor.
“The Academy congratulates our ACM Awards radio winners for championing the artists that make up the soundtrack of country fans’ lives,” Damon Whiteside, chief executive officer, Academy of Country Music, said at the time. “Country radio has always been and continues to be one of the most important ways for today’s favorite artists to connect with fans, and for fans to find up-and-coming acts to fall in love with. We celebrate these stellar country radio personalities.”
