In the interest of safety, the University of Kentucky Police Department has issued a Crime Bulletin for the UK community, following a weekend vehicle fire on campus.

On Sunday, the UK Police Department received a report of a vehicle fire in the parking lot behind Memorial Coliseum. The fire was extinguished with the assistance of the Lexington Fire Department. Preliminary investigation showed an unknown subject approached a parked Nissan Altima and intentionally set the vehicle on fire. UK Police, along with the University of Kentucky Fire Marshal’s Office, are continuing to investigate this case.

UK Police say they have issued this Crime Bulletin for the UK Community in compliance with the “Timely Notice” provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998.

The University of Kentucky notes they value a safe community for all students, staff, faculty and visitors. In the interest of promoting a safe and secure campus environment, UK Police are offering the following safety precautions:

  • If you see something, say something. The UK Police phone number for non-emergencies is (859) 257-UKPD (8573).  For emergencies, call 911.
  • Download and use the SafeZone App to report suspicious persons loitering around campus facilities.
  • In the event that you smell smoke, call 911 immediately.
  • If you locate a fire, pull the fire alarm and then call 911. Do NOT attempt to extinguish a fire yourself, unless you are properly trained to do so.
  • Anytime a fire alarm is activated, you should evacuate the building immediately.
  • Know the primary and secondary escape routes for each location, should an actual fire be taking place.
