The city of Elizabethtown experienced what city officials called “unprecedented rainfall” on Monday resulting in multiple streets being flooded.

The city said in a social media post that: “There is city-wide flooding and road closures. Most every creek is flowing outside its banks. Every area of Elizabethtown was affected,” as city officials strongly encouraged residents to not navigate the roadways.

“If possible, please stay home and off the roads until the rain ends, the water recedes and our team has the opportunity to overcome this weather event,” the city said. “We are experiencing widespread flash flooding and many roads across the city are impassable. Please avoid travel if possible. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around, don’t drown.”

The Elizabethtown Police Department said at least nine city streets were impassable: French Street at North Mulberry Street, West Poplar Street at North Mantle Avenue, North Mulberry Street at the train viaduct, Peterson Drive, Warfield Street at Henry Street, Idlewood Court, East Dixie Avenue at Nicholas Street, and Westport Road at Missouri Court.

Officials expect the flooding to continue on Tuesday as the region received additional rain, and more rainfall is expected.
