A man has been arrested for sexually abusing his daughter over 25 years ago.

Kentucky State Police said the investigation began in 1999 in Clinton County when troopers received a report that then 25-year-old James Shelton, of Albany, was molesting his daughter.

“Due to a lack of evidence, the investigation inevitably turned cold,” state police said.

On June 17, 2025, though, state police obtained new information about the case, leading to the investigation being reopened. As a result, detectives obtained information leading to the arrest of Shelton, now 61, charging him with 34 counts of first-degree sexual (victim under the age of 12) and 20 counts of first-degree sodomy (victim under the age of 12).

According to Fox56.com, the arrest citation states that under questioning, Shelton admitted to the abuse, as he said the abuse began when the victim was four-years-old and ended when she was 13, following the abuse being initially reported to police.

Additional charges are possible.

Shelton was lodged in the Clinton County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
