A former Caneyville fire and police chief has passed away.

Anthony Q. Clark, 60, of Caneyville, died on Saturday at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown following a lengthy illness.

Clark was a public servant for nearly all his adult life, as he spent nearly 40 years on the Caneyville Fire Department where he served as fire chief for over 30 years before retiring in 2021. Additionally, Clark was the Caneyville police chief for 30 years.

In 2022, he began serving as a part-time officer on the Clarkson Police Department and later, for a short time, was the Clarkson police chief.

One of Clark’s best friends, former Caneyville firefighter Marion Mudd, has fond memories of the time he and Clark and their families spent with each other over the last 28 years.

“When I joined the (Caneyville) fire department, he had been on there for quite some time,” Mudd said. “We were both single, so we did a lot of things together. And when we got married, our families got together and socialized. We vacationed together … Anthony loved the Smokey Mountains … and we tried to be good friends to each other: We would check on each other’s families if the other was out of town.”

Mudd, who took Clark to doctor’s appointments and provided him with company while he dealt with his illness, did his best to be the friend that Clark deserved.

“He has always been there for me, and over the last 10 months (during Clark’s illness), I’ve tried to be there for him. If you have a friend, you need to stand beside him. It’s just been a great friendship the whole time. He will definitely be missed.”

Clark’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Dermitt Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Deweese Cemetery, with a police and fire department escort to the cemetery.
