Three fire departments fought a blaze for over 90 minutes in Big Clifty early Tuesday morning after battling dense fog while en route.

The East Grayson and Clarkson Fire Departments, and Grayson County Emergency Management were dispatched Tuesday morning at approximately 2:15 to the residential fire in the 100 block of Langley Drive. The drive to the scene was harrowing for firefighters in spots, as visibility was practically zero due to heavy fog blanketing some stretches of roadways.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found smoke billowing from the front door and a window on the left side of the mobile home. Firefighters entered the home and found the left side of the trailer on fire. Making it difficult to battle the blaze was the large amount of the occupant’s belongings which were piled, nearly ceiling to floor, in multiple rooms on the left side of the mobile home.

Firefighters battled the fire from both inside and outside the residence, and had to create an opening (with a chainsaw and ax) on one end of the trailer so the fire could be accessed. Firemen also had to break through a window so firefighters could tear down drywall in order to reach and extinguish the fire.

Because of the difficulty reaching the fire through the immense amount of clutter, manpower from the Leitchfield Fire Department was requested and arrived at the scene at about 3:40 a.m.

The fire was declared extinguished at 4:18 a.m.

The blaze was contained to the left side of the mobile home, but the remaining rooms suffered heavy smoke damage.

The cause of the blaze is currently “undetermined,” according to East Grayson FD Assistant Chief Jonathan Blankenship.

No injuries were reported and all firefighters cleared the scene by 4:55 a.m.
