A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot and a 12-year-old girl was also shot while the boy was trying to protect his mother from a sexual assault.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found two juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, 15-year-old Luis N. Lopez, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The second victim, a 12-year-old girl, was transported to St. Claire Regional Medical Center before being taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center.
The suspect, 36-year-old Gildardo A. Martinez, of Morehead, was arrested “after a brief search of the area,” Morehead police said.
The shootings occurred when Martinez arrived at the residence after a night at a bar and “forced himself on his girlfriend,” who is Lopez’s mother, according to WKYT.com.
Lopez attempted to stop the assault when Martinez fired at the door where Lopez was positioned, striking the juvenile. Police still are not certain when Martinez shot the girl.
“It’s tragic this 15-year-old was trying to take up for his mom,” says Morehead Police Chief Derrick Blevins told WKYT.com.
Lopez was a rising sophomore at Rowan County High School, the Rowan County Coroner’s Office told media outlets.
Martinez was charged with murder, attempted rape, first-degree assault, resisting arrest, fleeing or evading police (on foot), second-degree disorderly conduct, and alcohol intoxication in a public place.
He’s being held in the Rowan County Detention Center on two bonds totaling $2 million.
