Over a dozen cows were killed by a lightning strike.
The incident happened in Jeffersonville, in Montgomery County, on Friday night.
The owner of the livestock discovered 13 dead cows and one dead heifer lying near a tree trunk on Saturday morning. The cows were worth about $40,000, the farmer’s wife told WKYT.com.
Gary Hamilton, Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources with the Montgomery County Extension Office, told the Lexington television station that cattle tend to group together during hot weather.
“[They] group up underneath shade, which are under trees. Once the lightning strikes the tree at the top, it’ll come down the trunk and out through the roots. And if the cattle are in close proximity to that, they’re goners.”
