An intoxicated driver who struck an Amish buggy and fled the scene has been arrested, according to Kentucky State Police.

State police said the incident occurred Thursday on Hwy 11 in Bath County.

The investigation showed that 21-year-old Ricardo G. Salas, of Mt. Sterling, was driving a Toyota Camry when he struck an Amish buggy. After striking the buggy, Salas stopped to check the damage to his car before fleeing the scene, state police said.

EMS responded to the crash and transported three juveniles to University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The male driver of the buggy, who is the father of the three injured juveniles, was not hurt.

Salas was located a short time later by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at a residence. The suspect had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet, according to a report by WYMT.com.

Salas’ Camry was found in Sharpsburg in Bath County covered with a tarp to hide the damage to the vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with DUI, four counts of first-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence, driving on a suspended driver’s license, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid, and failure of owner to maintain insurance.

Salas was lodged in the Montgomery County Regional Jail.
