
Gladys Rae Wood Buckles, 96, of Caneyville died on Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, at The Bee Hive Homes Assisted Living in Leitchfield.
She was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Millwood, Kentucky, to William S. Wood and Mamie Rachel Evans Wood. She was a graduate of Caneyville High School. Gladys had a variety of jobs through the years but primarily assisted her husband, Dr. James Reno Buckles, in his family medicine practice in Caneyville from 1967 until they retired in 2011.
Gladys was a member of Caneyville Christian Church. She was a spelling bee champion in her youth, which led to a life-long love of word puzzles, and was a dedicated New York Yankees fan. Recently she was honored for being a 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Merry Lynn (Hub) Green of Caneyville and Donna (Chuck) Stinnett of Henderson; two sons, Dennis (Teresa) Buckles of Caneyville and Allan (Marty) Buckles of Leitchfield; eight grandchildren, Mark (Christy) Buckles of Caneyville, Martha (Steve) Hayes of Lexington, Marita Buckles of Bowling Green, Tyler (Erinn) Green of Cincinnati, Rachel (Keith) Brown of Bowling Green, Rebecca (Josh) Hein of Henderson, Grant (Charlene) Buckles of Louisville and Daniel (Tara) Buckles of Lexington; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor (Cameron) Beal of Bowling Green; Reese Hayes of Lexington; T.J. Green, Caroline Green and Mary Katherine Green of Cincinnati; Anna Margaret Brown and Will Brown of Bowling Green, and Henry Buckles and Madeline Buckles of Louisville; a great-great-grandson, Brady James Beal of Bowling Green; a sister, Shelba Jean Hayes of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Dr. James Reno Buckles; her daughter Holly Jeanne Buckles; her siblings Mary Montgomery, Gola Scharon, Wayne T. Wood, William S. Wood Jr. and Shirley Jane Wood; and a granddaughter, Allison Wood Stinnett.
To honor Gladys’ wishes, a private family funeral and graveside service was chosen with officiants Bro. David Brown, retired, and Bro. Kirt Scott of Caneyville Christian Church. Burial will be in Layman Memorial Cemetery.
