The mother of 10-year-old Jayden Spicer has been charged in his death.
Felicia A. Gross, 33, of Jackson, was charged with second-degree manslaughter (a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison), abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and falsely reporting an incident. She was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
Gross was charged after Kentucky State Police investigators on Tuesday “received new information related to the disappearance of 10-year-old Jayden Spicer,” state police said.
As a result, investigators identified a new sector to search in a heavily wooded area along Canoe Road in the Jackson community in Breathitt County. Detectives responded to the location and soon after, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Jayden’s remains were discovered buried in a shallow grave.
The remains were transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
Gross told police Jayden went missing from their residence on Panbowl Brand Road.
Jayden, according to multiple media outlets, only recently began living with his mother following the death of his great-grandmother.
Trooper Matt Gayheart, KSP Post 13’s Public Affairs Officer, released the following statement:
“I would like to take a moment to thank the many different organizations that assisted in the search efforts for Jayden. All of the volunteers that spent numerous hours and days trying to locate him. Thank you to every person that sent tips or even shared a social media post. Thank you for the many prayers that were prayed, and we ask that you continue to pray for a community that grieves during this tragic loss.”
