Grayson County High School will compete in the prestigious King of the Bluegrass basketball tournament this coming December.
The tournament, which has been held since 1981, is hosted at Fairdale High School on the south side of Louisville.
It will be the second appearance for the Cougars in the event.
In 1982, Grayson County defeated Bullitt Central in their first game before dropping contests to Fairdale and Florida’s Ocala Vanguard.
Over the years, the tournament has featured future NBA stars like Derek Anderson, Rex Chapman, O.J. Mayo, and Rajon Rondo, as well as Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Williams (selected National High School Player of the Year), and Reggie Lewis, who all played on the same Baltimore Dunbar squad that captured the second King of the Bluegrass crown.
Additionally, there have been 18 former athletes to go on and play in the NFL, four in the MLB, and even one to win a gold medal in the Summer Olympics.
“It’s just one of those things, if someone calls you and offers it, even if you go 0-4 or whatever it is, you say yes and you don’t turn it down because that is just a tribute to the school and to the team and the players that we got,” head coach Travis Johnston said about the selection.
Fresh off a berth in the 3rd Region championship game, the 2025/26 Grayson County boys will have high expectations leading into the new year.
The team will be headlined by returning honorable mention all-state standout Jack Logsdon, along with rising senior Brody Armstrong and junior point guard Spencer Langdon.
The Cougars also add transfer guard Jagger Mardis, who averaged 16.2 points per game while shooting 43% from three for LaRue County last season.
The field for the tournament includes Butler, Covington Catholic, Fairdale, Frederick Douglass, LaRue County, Lyon County, Madison Central, Male, North Laurel, North Oldham, St. Xavier, Trinity (Louisville), and Warren Central. Additionally, there will be a school from Tennessee and Alabama to round out the 16-team group.
The 2025 King of the Bluegrass will run from December 17-21, with the full bracket set to come out later this year.
