Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown is joining law enforcement and first responder agencies across the nation to participate in Operation Clear Track (OCT), the largest rail safety initiative in the nation.
This annual event takes place during “See Tracks? Think Train Week” and is designed to reduce the number of railroad crossing and trespassing incidents through education and enforcement.
“Led by Amtrak and Operation Lifesaver, Inc., OCT brings attention to the alarming reality that every three hours in the U.S., a vehicle or person is struck by a train,” according to Kentucky State Police. “Each year, more than 2,300 people are injured or killed in railroad crossing and trespass incidents across North America, with over 60 percent of collisions occurring at crossings equipped with lights and/or gates.”
KSP Offers the Following Rail Safety Tips:
- Never Try to Beat a Train: Trains can take a mile or more to come to a complete stop.
- Cross Tracks at Designated Crossings: Obey all warning signs, signals and gates.
- Obey Lights and Gates: Never cross train tracks where a safety light or gate is engaged.
- See Something, Say Something: If you see something suspicious near the tracks, contact your local KSP Post or dial 911 in an emergency.
