A Hardin County man who left a loaded firearm within reach of a child, resulting in the boy shooting and killing himself, has been sentenced.
Damarco Callen, 27, of Radcliff, pled guilty to reckless homicide and first-degree wanton endangerment, both class D felonies, after a six-year-old boy found a loaded handgun underneath a pillow and accidentally shot himself.
As K105 previously reported, the incident happened in January 2025 on North Street in Radcliff.
Callen was in another room of the home when he heard a gunshot come from the bedroom.
The child was airlifted to a Louisville hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Callen was initially charged with first-degree assault, four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and unlawfully permit/provide a minor to possess a handgun. Callen, though, reached a plea deal with prosecutors where he agreed to plead guilty to an amended charge of reckless homicide along with the felony wanton endangerment counts, according to The News-Enterprise.
He was sentenced to two years in prison.
