A man has been arrested for shooting a vehicle containing two people near Central Hardin High School during a road rage incident.
The Elizabethtown Police Department said the shooting occurred at 2:22 Thursday afternoon.
“The incident began when an adult male and adult female victim were traveling on Ring Road in a Ford Maverick and were cut off by a Dodge Dart, driven by Jeremy L. Yates, 50, of Eastview,” according to Elizabethtown Police Department Public Affairs Officer John Thomas. “Both vehicles stopped at a red light, where a verbal altercation occurred. During the exchange, a baseball bat was displayed, and Yates deployed bear spray on the victims.”
The driver of the Maverick attempted to leave the scene, but Yates pursued the vehicle on Ring Road. At a stoplight, the adult male victim threw a ceramic tile at Yates’ vehicle before continuing to drive away. Yates, though, continued to follow the Maverick, before cutting off the victims near Central Hardin High School, Thomas said.
Yates then exited his vehicle with a firearm.
Police said that, in fear for his life, the adult male victim drove toward Yates, striking his vehicle and then attempting to drive away. At that point, Yates fired two shots at the Maverick.
“One round struck the tailgate of the victims’ vehicle, while the second penetrated the rear window, passing between the occupants and striking the windshield,” Thomas said.
No one was injured.
Yates was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment (discharge of a firearm) and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond.
As K105 reported on Thursday, the shooting resulted in Central Hardin High School being placed on soft lockdown at 2:25 p.m. The lockdown was lifted at 3:15 p.m.
