Greenwood used a powerful rushing attack and capitalized on turnovers to pull away from Grayson County, 42–19, in the district opener Friday night at The Swamp.

The Gators (3–2) had four different players score on the ground, led by Davis Chaney, who found the end zone three times. Greenwood broke open a close game by scoring 28 points across the second and third quarters.

Grayson County (2–3) took an early lead when Ethan Mudd recovered a fumble and returned it 19 yards to set up Jamycen Buster’s 17-yard touchdown run. But Greenwood answered with back-to-back scores late in the first quarter, including two short touchdown runs from Chaney.

The Cougars stayed within striking distance in the second and third quarters, cashing in on two Greenwood muffed punts. Tanner Wanner scored on a 3-yard run in the second, and quarterback Jake Bratcher connected with Shane Hall for a 6-yard touchdown pass in the third. Grayson also had an interception from Eli Johnston that set up a scoring chance.

Greenwood’s depth proved too much, as Levi Wyatt added two rushing touchdowns and Cesar Ortega scored from 23 yards out to seal the win.

Bratcher went 4-of-7 passing for 28 yards and a touchdown before giving way to Trigg Payne, who was 4-for-4 for 49 yards and added 21 on the ground in the fourth quarter. Buster finished with 29 rushing yards and two receptions for 17 more, while Hall had three catches for 30 yards and a score. Defensively, Kamden Cornwell led Grayson County in tackles.

The Cougars will look to regroup next Friday when they travel to face Barren County (2–3), which lost to Bowling Green in its district opener.
