Katie VanMeter Cockerel, age 55, of Clarkson, KY, passed away Monday, (October 6, 2025) at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown, KY. She was born on May 5, 1970 in Leitchfield, KY, the daughter of Mary Faye VanMeter and the late William VanMeter.
Katie dedicated 35 years to the Parent-Child Center here in Grayson County, where she served both as a teacher and in administrative roles throughout her time there. She also drove a school bus for Head Start. She was known for her outgoing, friendly and social nature. She enjoyed being a Mimi to her grandchildren, shopping with friends, and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the McGrew Memorial General Baptist Church and attended Providence Baptist Church where she faithfully served the Lord and taught Sunday school for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Sonny Cockerel of Clarkson; sons, Jay Cockerel (Stacy) of Clarkson and Justin Cockerel (Erica) of St. Paul; four grandchildren, Abby, Claire, Easton and Ava; two sisters, Lora VanMeter Logsdon (Mitchell) of Clarkson and Mandy Blanton (Joe) of Peonia; and her mother and father, Mary Faye and Jeff VanMeter of Clarkson.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her father, William VanMeter.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, (October 9, 2025) at the McGrew Memorial General Baptist Church. Bro. Curtis Decker will be officiating. Burial will be in the McGrew Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the McGrew Memorial General Baptist Church from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. Thursday until time of services.
