A battery charger designed to keep batteries charged while not in use is to blame for a garage fire in Clarkson.

The Clarkson and Leitchfield Fire Departments and Grayson County Emergency Management responded to the fire at approximately 7:45 Tuesday morning in the 1300 block of Millerstown Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a large garage, only feet from a residence, emitting heavy smoke. The garage door would not open, forcing firefighters to cut the door open in order to clear smoke from the metal building.

Firefighters took the drop ceiling down to extinguish the blaze and check for hot spots in the attic area.

The fire began, according to Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall, with a trickle charger — used to keep batteries charged when not in use — inside a boat. The boat suffered heavy damage.

Firefighters, though, kept the blaze from spreading to the nearby residence.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters cleared the scene at just before 9:00 a.m.
