The Robertson County sheriff has been arrested for DUI for the third time in less than two years.
Terry L. Gray, 48, of Mt. Olivet, was arrested by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday night after deputies observed Gray driving 110 miles per hour on Hwy 11 with lights and sirens activated for no reason. The arrest citation, according to WKYT.com, states that Gray crossed the center line multiple times and nearly flipped his vehicle twice.
“There was no reason for him to be running lights and sirens,” Mason Co. Sheriff Ryan Swolsky told WKYT.com. “Obviously could smell the odor of alcoholic beverage on his person. Proceeded to do a DUI investigation from there.”
Gray registered a .226 blood alcohol content, nearly three times the legal limit to drive in Kentucky. Police located a bottle Fireball whiskey in Gray’s vehicle.
In addition to DUI, Gray was charged with felony wanton endangerment, first-degree official misconduct and reckless driving. He’s being held in the Mason County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash bond.
Gray was also arrested in August 2024 for driving and wrecking a tractor while under influence. Prior to that arrest, he was collared by Kentucky State Police on December 13, 2023, after he drove impaired in his marked squad car near a school.
Gray first became sheriff in October 2021 after Mark Sutton resigned the post. He previously served for many years as a park ranger at Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park.
Gov. Andy Beshear and the director of the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association have called for Gray’s resignation. Beshear said in a letter to Gray that if he doesn’t step down, he will take steps to remove him from office.
