A child sex predator has been sentenced to three life sentences.
Harrison Cress, 58, of Perry County, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree sodomy (victim under the age of 12), incest (victim under the age of 12) and three counts of first-degree sexual abuse (victim under the age of 12).
“Because of the heinous nature of the crimes, the jury recommended three life sentences,” the Kentucky attorney general’s office said in a news release. “Sexual abusers often ‘groom’ their victims by giving gifts, attention and/or special privileges. Cress groomed multiple children, building trust so he could exploit and abuse them.”
After years of abuse, one of the child victims bravely came forward to report the abuse to her grandmother, according to the attorney general’s office. The Children’s Advocacy Centers in Ashland and Hazard interviewed the victims, helping lead to Cress’ arrest.
Kentucky State Police, with support from the Perry Co. Sheriff’s Office, investigated the case, while the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit prosecuted Cress.
“These brave kids spoke up about their abuse, and their guardians believed them and then took action. Crimes like this happen in communities across Kentucky, and I encourage every adult to know the signs and how to report it,” Attorney General Russell Coleman said. “I’m deeply grateful to the amazing Children’s Advocacy Center professionals, law enforcement, prosecutors and advocates who stared into this darkness and secured a conviction so this abuser is never able to harm another child.”
