The Grayson County JV football team hosted Christian Academy-Louisville (CAL) at Cougar Stadium on Monday evening.

The Centurions’ varsity squad is currently undefeated and ranked second in the state regardless of class in the latest poll released by Kentucky Sports Radio. CAL has been one of the state’s most dominant programs over the past decade, highlighted by three consecutive Class 3A state championships.

In a competitive game, the visitors pulled away late to win 20-0.

“I thought our guys competed really well,” head coach Bryan Jones said. “There are a few plays here and there that you’d like to get back and do a little differently, but I think overall, our guys competed exceptionally well.”

Jones wanted to use a skilled team as a measuring stick for just where the Grayson County program is headed.

“I always like to step out and play somebody that, to me, is a program measure,” he told K105. “Last year, we went and played DeSales. We had a game scheduled against (Owensboro) Catholic a few weeks ago, and then we scheduled this one as well.”

The Cougars trailed the game only 8-0 at halftime and CAL used two short fields to add late touchdowns, but overall, the homestanding team performed well.

“When you play with a team neck and neck like that, you’re allowed to use that in a different way and say, ‘Hey, look, we’re probably a lot better than you guys give yourself credit for. If we get to work, how good could we be?'” Jones added.

The varsity Cougars will host Warren Central on Friday evening, while the JV squad will hit the road to face Logan County on Monday evening.
