A man with a rifle spurred a lockdown at the Breckinridge County High School and Breckinridge County Middle School campus on Friday.
The incident occurred early Friday afternoon when 34-year-old Joshua J. Miller, of Somerset, was walking and behaving erratically near the intersection of Hwy 259 and Hwy 60, less than a mile from the campus, while carrying an AR-15, according to a source familiar with the incident.
The Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office responded and arrested Miller.
It’s unclear why the suspect was in possession of the rifle.
Miller was lodged in the Breckinridge County Detention Center and charged with first-degree disorderly conduct.
Dr. Nick Carter, Superintendent of Breckinridge County Schools, issued the following statement on the incident:
This afternoon, we were made aware of a potentially dangerous situation around the campuses of Breckinridge County Middle School, the BCATC (technology center), and Breckinridge County High School. Until we received word from local law enforcement, we had all students and staff remain inside our buildings. Fortunately, this situation was addressed quickly by local law enforcement, and we are currently resuming normal operations. We wanted our school community to know about the events of the afternoon and how seriously we take student safety. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
(Editor’s Note: Miller is listed by the Breckinridge Co. Det. Center as being from Somerset, while the Breckinridge Co. Sheriff’s Office says he’s from Russell Springs.)
