Masden leads as Cougar Runners Shine in Regional Championships

The Cougar Cross Country Teams competed in the 3A Region 2 Championship meet on Saturday, October 25 at Thomas Nelson High School in Bardstown. The Cougars had a strong showing against the region’s best and will be sending runners to the 3A State Championship meet in Lexington on November 1st.
The boys’ regional championship 5K started the morning, with freshman Levi Masden setting the pace for the Cougars. Masden finished 3rd out of 66 runners, running a personal best time of 16:29. Masden’s top-eight finish also earned him All-Region Team honors. Three other Cougars set personal best times: junior Carter Bernard at 17:51, sophomore Hayden Snyder at 18:51, and sophomore Layton Lush at 20:14. Overall, the Cougars finished 5th out of 10 teams with 115 points. The top five finish qualified the entire Cougar boys’ team for the State Championship.
Greenwood’s Justin Doran claimed the boy’s individual championship with a time of 15:52. Central Hardin won the team championship, with Greenwood earning runner-up honors.
In the girls regional championship 5K, freshman Reagan Coffey ran a season-best time of 21:41 to place 23rd out of 64 runners and qualified for the state championship meet as an individual. Freshman Jessy Smith ran a personal best time of 21:47 and also individually qualified for the state meet. Also running personal best times were junior Josey Smith at 22:08, seventh-grader Abigail Griffith at 23:53, and seventh-grader Isabella Masden at 25:03. Overall, the Lady Cougars finished 7th out of 9 teams with 168 points.
Maddison Bates of Central Hardin won the girls’ individual championship, finishing in 18:54. Greenwood won the girls’ team championship, with South Warren claiming the runner-up trophy.
The Cougars will finish their season on Saturday, November 1, at the 3A State Championship at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. The boys championship 5K will start at 10:00am Eastern, with the girls championship to follow at 10:45am.
