A western Kentucky woman died after re-entering her burning home to save her cat.

Union County Sheriff Jason Thomas said in a social media post that Sandy Wilkins, of Morganfield, died on Tuesday afternoon on T.P. Luckett Road at approximately 2:00 when she “ran back into the house in order to save her cat she cared for deeply.”

The sheriff said Wilkins re-entered the home after earlier exiting the residence despite “the house (being) already filled with smoke and the fire spreading.”

“Sandra did not make it out,” Thomas wrote.

Firefighters located Wilkins in the burning home and began life saving measures to no avail.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fire, but Thomas said foul play is not suspected.
