A local restaurant is offering an unbeatable special to customers for as long as the government shutdown continues.
Hometown Hangout, at 121 West White Oak Street in Leitchfield, is offering “The Blue Plate,” comprised of a cheeseburger, fries and drink for FREE between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. until the end of the government shutdown, which has negatively impacted many federal financial and food aid assistance programs.
The restaurant, a Higdon family affair, is managed by co-owner Mandi Higdon, who played a major role in conceptualizing “The Blue Plate,” along with her mother and co-owner, Tina Higdon.
“We know life can be hard, and we understand that many in our community are facing tough times and need a break. We want to help those who are struggling with food insecurity or genuine financial difficulty,” the restaurant said in a Facebook post announcing the special.
“The Blue Plate” is available for dine-in or carry-out, and is offered on the “honor system.”
“We are offering this on the honor system,” Hometown Hangout said. “Please reserve this meal for those who have no other option, so we can ensure the program remains available for the neighbors who need it most.”
Hometown Hangout owners stress that there are: “No questions, no judgement, just support. We’re all in this together.”
While the government shutdown could be on the verge of ending, as the U.S. Senate is taking a series of procedural votes aimed at finalizing the deal between Republicans and Democrats, the bill still needs approval from the House and the signature of the president before the shutdown officially ends. A vote is expected to take place later this week, as House Speaker Mike Johnson said House members should begin returning to Washington D.C.
Until then, Hometown Hangout is opening its arms and welcoming anyone in need to have a meal on them.
