No, Grayson County Middle School Principal Gary Parker has not stepped down from the position he’s held since July 2017.

But on Friday, Parker was playing second-fiddle to state Sen. Steve Meredith who was “Principal for a Day” under an initiative by the Kentucky Association of School Administrators.

The idea of “Principal for a Day” is to give legislators and other elected officials “an opportunity to see for themselves some of the terrific things taking place in Kentucky schools,” Grayson County Schools (GCS) said.

“Sen. Meredith’s day ran the gamut of both expected and unexpected principal duties,” GCS said in a social media post.

Meredith, throughout the day, visited classrooms, took charge of the lunchroom and made the morning announcements.

“He praised students for the respect they showed in their classrooms and noted the real-world nature of lessons he observed,” GCS said. “One of those was cross-curricular and included financial literacy, health and art.”

In a nod to the topical, Meredith assisted students in taking on Thanksgiving meal planning, including purchasing food while living within a budget, and determining nutritional value.

“That kind of coordination and critical thinking, that’s everyday life,” the senator said.

Meredith also praised staff members for “their compassion for the students.”

“You can tell every one of them is here for absolutely the right reason,” Meredith stated before returning the principal hat to Parker.
