A dangerously reckless driver who ran a motorist off the road before crashing into a semi-tuck on the Western Kentucky Parkway is currently hospitalized and could face charges “based on dash cam video and any other evidence,” according to Kentucky State Police.

As K105 reported Tuesday morning, the crash happened Monday night at approximately 7:30, as the Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS responded to the wreck at the 102-mile marker of the westbound parkway.

In the minutes before the crash, the semi driver and another motorist both called Grayson County Dispatch to report a dangerously reckless driver. The driver, according to the motorist and truck driver, got on the parkway at Clarkson and began traveling at a high rate of speed while weaving all over the roadway in a Pontiac Vibe.

The reckless driver, a male, then slowed down to roughly 40 miles per hour, as the semi-truck and other motorist passed the Pontiac.

The Vibe then sped back up. The motorist told K105 he thought the car was driving around 90 miles per hour when, although the motorist was trying to avoid the Vibe, it ran the motorist off the roadway and into the median. The motorist was not injured.

Seconds later, the Vibe crashed into the semi-truck’s driver’s side front, as it apparently attempted to enter the right lane of travel.

The crash was recorded on the semi’s dashboard camera and showed the Pontiac, after hitting the semi, get sideways and slam into a guardrail at a substantial speed. The impact propelled the vehicle back across all three lanes of the westbound parkway where it came to rest on the inside shoulder.

The driver of the Vibe was found in the passenger side floorboard, as it appeared the driver was not wearing a seat belt, according to the truck driver and motorist.

A Kentucky State Police trooper arrived at the scene and worked the crash, as Grayson County deputies were assisting in the search for a missing Wax girl at the time of the wreck.

The Vibe’s driver was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center with serious injuries. He was later transported to University of Louisville Hospital, according to KSP Post 4 Public Affairs Officer Bryan Washer.

Washer, when asked if the driver will face charges, told K105: “At this time, the trooper does not have charges pending. There may be charges forthcoming at a later date based on dash cam video and any other evidence, according to the trooper.”
