Related brands Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 85,000 and 250,500 sedans, respectively, over an issue with the check valve that may lead to the fuel tank melting.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2020-23 Hyundai Sonatas and model-year 2021-24 Kia K5s.

The check valve in these vehicles may be damaged and allow air into the fuel tank, which can cause the tank to expand and contact hot exhaust components that may eventually melt the tank. This issue increases the risk of fire and injury.

As a fix, dealers will replace the check valve, as well as inspect and replace the fuel tank, as necessary. Additionally, Hyundai dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be done for free.

Both brands will notify owners on Janunary 16, 2026, but those with questions in the meantime can contact Hyundai at 855-371-9460 (Hyundai’s number for this recall is 286), Kia at 800-333-4542 (Kia’s number for this recall is SC356), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
