A driver fleeing the Leitchfield Police Department at a high rate of speed crashed into a garage on Peonia Road.
The incident began at approximately 10:15 Monday night when Leitchfield Police Officer Caleb Owens observed a Ford Focus driving recklessly and without lights on as the vehicle turned south from White Street onto South Main Street.
As Owens activated his lights and siren, the vehicle fled south on Anneta Road, as speeds reached over 90 miles per hour.
The Ford turned left onto St. Anthony Road before turning right onto Peonia Road. As the eastbound Ford continued to flee on Peonia Road, speeds reached nearly 100 miles per hour.
Owens, who was earlier joined in the pursuit by Leitchfield PD Sgt. Chuck Hoover, lost sight of the vehicle as the chase reached the 10000 block of Peonia Road. Only a few moments later, Owens spotted the vehicle, as it had left the roadway while coming out of curve, traveled through a yard for 110 feet and crashed into a large garage in the 10100 block of Peonia Road.
The driver, a male, fled the area on foot into a pitch-black wooded area.
Multiple law enforcement officers soon arrived on scene, including the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Wax Fire Department and EMS. Additionally, a Hart County deputy arrived and utilized a drone to search for the suspect, who was not found.
The investigation into the incident continues.
