A man suspected of being under the influence of drugs walked into a Magoffin County deputy’s living room on Christmas afternoon, where the deputy’s two small children were playing, and began yelling the deputy’s name.

Magoffin Co. Deputy Tyler Rafferty wrote about the incident on a Facebook page promoting him as the next Magoffin County sheriff.

“It was Christmas Day, around 2:00 in the afternoon … I was in the bedroom watching TV while my kids played in the front room when I suddenly heard a man yell, ‘Lafferty!’ Moments later, my 5-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son came running to me saying, ‘Daddy, there’s a man in the living room!’”

Lafferty rushed into the living room and observed a man, 52-year-old Timothy L. McKenzie, of Salyersville, in the room.

“He was clearly not in his right mind and appeared to be under the influence,” Lafferty said.

The deputy further stated that McKenzie “was escorted back out the same door he came through, a lot faster than he entered.”

After a brief struggle, Lafferty detained the suspect and placed him under arrest.

McKenzie was charged with second-degree burglary, public intoxication (excludes alcohol), resisting arrest, first-degree criminal trespass, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
