An investigation spurred by the Department of Community Based Services (DCBS) led to the seizure of nearly 120 pounds of marijuana, firearms and cash.
The initial investigation led the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and DCBS officials to a home on Akersville Road (Hwy 87) where police noticed a “strong odor of marijuana” coming from a garage on the property.
In the garage in “plain view,” police observed “several Ziplock bags filled with marijuana and several other bags filled with more marijuana,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
Police then made contact with the property owner, 48-year-old Danny R. Russell. He was arrested and charged with trafficking in marijuana and lodged in the Barren County Detention Center.
The next day, police returned to the property with a search warrant. After a deputy read Russell — who had been released from jail — the warrant, the suspect led police to his vehicle where he “opened the passenger side door of the truck and started tossing out duffel bags (full of marijuana), in which he told deputies, ‘This is what you missed yesterday,’” the sheriff’s office stated.
Deputies also found an AR-15 rifle and several black loaded magazines in the truck and more marijuana on the property.
In total, police seized 118 pounds of marijuana, a firearm and cash.
Russell was charged with trafficking in marijuana (more than five pounds, enhanced by the presence of a firearm), possession of firearm by convicted felon and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
