Kentucky State Police is investigating an inmate death at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex (EKCC).
State police said troopers were contacted by the medium/minimum-security prison in West Liberty (Morgan Co.) on Sunday evening to investigate an assault that occurred between two inmates where 49-year-old Marcus D. Gray, of Corbin, was found unresponsive in his cell.
Gray was transported to Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital before being airlifted to University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The ensuing investigation revealed that Gray had been assaulted by 32-year-old John D. Thomas, of Burlington.
No charges have yet been filed, as the case will be presented to a Morgan County Grand Jury, according to KSP.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Trooper Wes Montgomery.
